If you are privileged to own a period home that may or may not be listed then you may wish to take extra care in planning any alterations to the garden. You will obviously want to consider sympathetic planting and garden features that compliment the style, design and period of the property.
If you own a listed property then Listed Building Consent is administered by your local authority. As each building is individual there are no specific rules for what can or can’t be done without consent. When the Council considers whether to grant or to refuse an application it considers the desirability of preserving the building, its setting and those features which make it special.

Remember that Listed status covers a whole building, inside and out, so that includes the garden. Barry Holdsworth can undertake discussions with the local authority Conservation Officer in order to check if consent is required. If it is then Barry can complete the necessary paperwork for you and you should receive a decision on smaller schemes within eight weeks.

‘Christmas Rose’

‘Christmas Rose’ or Helleborus niger is an ideal plant for dappled shade and flowers from November through to March. There is always a plant flowering at some time of the year and those that offer up their blooms during the short, cold days of winter are especially welcome. Make room in that odd corner for these super plants with their deep green leaves and single nodding flowers. The flowers are normally white, but some new hybrids offer light pink or red colouring. As a garden designer I like to use these plants and I have a whole bed of small Hellebores among ferns and spring flowering bulbs that offer interest right through winter and spring. Christmas Rose

Brassicas and winter weather

Brassica grower Geoff Philpott knows a thing or two about the weather, he is a keen amateur weather watcher. Apparently we are now in a new 22 year sun cycle, which started 2 years ago and this cycle means much colder winters. Geoff grows over 120ha of brassicas, with over 100 varieties of cauliflowers, on the Isle of Thanet in Kent. One tip is to grow the plants closer in the row, but place the rows further apart.
