Soil conditions
I have restored 2 walled kitchen gardens. This one in Surrey has walls 4 metres high on a sloping site is situated on the South Downs. Set over chalk with a shallow top soil the ground required several applications of compost in order to bring the fertility levels up to what they had been.
Soil is the key to growing any plant, but especially top quality fruit and vegetables. Also, by rotating the crops the ground does not become depleted of nutrients or harbour disease associated with mono cropping.
